Family-friendly Hours
You deserve meaningful time away from work.

We have fewer required hours than most firms. We want you to have actual work-life balance. Everyone benefits when we have time to do things that refresh our mind, body, and spirit.

Partner Status
You deserve the opportunity to advance.

If you want to become a partner, we’ll create that opportunity and set you on that path quickly. (If management isn’t your goal, that’s fine, too.) We will develop a career plan that meets your goals.

Strategic Challenge
You deserve to flex your brain.

In school or at your current firm, you may have been taught to focus on the .5% of the tax code devoted to tax compliance. At Pine, we abide by that .5%, but our real focus is on the remaining 99.5%. There are hundreds of thousands of pages of tax code, regulations, and precedent that benefit our clients. It’s a lot of work to master them all, but the payoff is huge.

Employee Testimonials
My old job made me feel stuck and frustrated because there was no room for advancement or promotion. The flexible growth opportunities at Pine make me excited to be at a place I can maximize my career. I love that I can grow at a pace that’s right for me, and Pine is making that possible!
Brooke Anderson, Tax Manager
“My family is very important to me, and my old workplace made me feel guilty for being a young mom. I felt conflicted about having to decide between events for my kids and workplace obligations. Working at Pine has afforded me a flexible schedule where I no longer have to choose! I now feel like I have a balance between life and work, and my life is better because of it.”
Luz Tellado, Senior Tax Associate

At Pine, we maximize wealth by minimizing taxes.

Nine out of ten new clients are paying more taxes than they owe. We believe that everyone should pay only the taxes they’re legally obligated to pay and not a penny more. For our CPAs, creating a tax strategy that leverages all of the tax-saving opportunities is a rewarding challenge.

You’re invited to be part of our team, learn our methods, and then help our clients keep as much of their hard-earned money as possible.

We’re looking for tax professionals who:

Serve Gladly
Your success depends on you putting in extra effort to serve our clients well. “Extra effort” does not automatically mean extra hours. There’s a lot of thinking, strategy, and communication built into our process. Our clients pay a premium for the services we provide. We work hard to make sure they’re incredibly happy.
Learn Constantly
You deserve incredible training and resources (the kind we always wanted from our employers). But we don’t train everyone to be interchangeable. Every tax professional has unique passions and skills. We want to leverage your strengths and offset any weaknesses with other people who have the corresponding skill. We will support your drive to achieve your potential.
Communicate Honestly
Sometimes a case gets complicated or life happens. We need you to come to leadership and say, “Hey, this is too much.” Or, “Something’s come up in my family.” Or “I need help with this one.” We are good at solving problems when we’re made aware that one exists.
Work Dependably
You are a professional, and we’ll treat you like one. That means, when you say you’re going to do something, we expect you to do it. We won’t babysit or hold your feet to the fire so long as you’re doing the job you agreed to do. Will we support you? Absolutely. Can you ask for help? Yes. Will we micromanage or nag? No.
Grind Seasonally
As a tax professional, you know there are busy times of year. During tax seasons, the expectation is that everyone at Pine will work 55 hours a week. (And because we’re all good with numbers, let’s agree that “51-ish” is not the same as “55”).  Requiring only 55 hours sets us apart from most firms, which say you need to work 55–60 hours, but they actually require 80–90. That’s not true at Pine & Co. No one is required to work more than 55 hours a week during peak seasons (though you can work more if you choose). We reward your hard work with overtime, time and a half, and bonuses. Ask us about tax-time expectations and payments during your interview so we share a clear understanding.

"My priorities are God, then family, then work.
Am I always successful at keeping them in that order? No. But I am determined to reorient myself every time I get them confused. My strong encouragement to you: do not make work your number 1 priority in life."
Mike Pine, Founding Partner

We know that every firm talks about “work-life balance” but no one really means it.

You’ve been burned when other employers have broken this promise. We’re asking you to trust us. We really do care about your life outside of work.
Let’s use tax season as an example. Most firms will say you need to work 55–60 hours, but they'll actually require 80–90. Or if you only work 55, they withhold bonuses or promotions.

There’s no question we work hard at Pine during tax season, but here’s what that looked like this year:
⁕ Everyone was expected to work 55 hours a week.
⁕ Overtime, time and a half, and bonuses were paid at different milestones over 40 hours.
⁕ Bonus days off (paid, but not part of your PTO allotment) were given to the entire company after tax season.
⁕ People who chose to work more than 55 hours made a significant amount of money. But working that many hours was their choice.
Employee Testimonials
“I was so burned out in my previous job, because the owner didn’t seem to care about me or my growth. Now, I wake up excited every morning because I’m part of a team that cares about our clients and about each other. I couldn’t ask for better people to work for and with!”
Stephen Carmichael, Tax Manager
“I was bored in my old job as there wasn’t much to learn and it seemed like the same thing day after day. In my new job at Pine, I get to learn new things, which is building my confidence and honing my ability to manage multiple tasks. I’m so happy to have found a company where the culture encourages growth opportunities!”
Muhammad Siddiqui, Associate

Curious about the Pine team or our process?

These are the common questions (and skepticism) we hear.
How big is Pine & Company?
As of Q2 2022, we have a management team of five and employee base of 15. At the rate we're growing, we expect to grow to a staff of 25–30 by 2023.
You talk about your team like a family…
That’s because we've built a team that actually loves each other. Maybe that sounds sappy, but company culture is a big priority for us. We have family meals at the office every two weeks. We know each other’s kids’ names. We ask for help when we need it, and we offer help without judgement. Our hope is that the people at Pine will become more than just your “co-workers.” It’s important that the people we hire fit well in our culture.
Do I have to be local or willing to relocate to the Roanoke area?
Almost all of our employees are local. Some are in the office every day. Most work from home a day or two every week. We’re happy to talk about a hybrid in-office/from-home work schedule.

We also are open to fully remote employees. It’s not something we have a long history with, but it’s possible for the right candidate, in the right role. Don’t let your location prevent you from applying.

From a technology standpoint, we're 100% cloud based, so anyone can work from anywhere.
Is your compensation competitive?
It’s more than competitive. Our compensation package is in the top five percent of the industry. We hire the best, train you well, and want you to stay.
What are the benefits like?
Our benefits package is generous and growing. Benefits for every full-time position take effect after a 90-day probation period. Current benefits are:

⁕ Medical insurance through Blue Cross Blue Shield of Texas
⁕ Voluntary dental insurance through Delta Dental
⁕ Short & long term disability insurance through Guardian
⁕ Life insurance / accidental death and dismemberment insurance through Guardian
⁕ A 401k program with up to a 3% company match.
⁕ 8 company-wide paid holidays, plus a minimum of 15 PTO days. We also include a few bonus days off after tax season.

So what’s the catch with making partner?
We understand this question, because become a  partner usually involves time, grades, office politics, and a bunch of unwritten rules. That’s how it worked in the big firms we came from.

At Pine, right now, the opportunity for partner exists for anyone in the firm that wants it. If you can do your job, if your clients are happy with you, if your team is happy with you, then partner is available to you.

We can do this because we're growing so quickly. The same opportunity might not always exist, but right now, there's upward mobility available to every single person.
What if my career goal doesn’t include becoming a partner?
At Pine, we respect people who don't want to constantly be promoted. We have two incredible team members who don't want to become managers. They just don't want the extra responsibility. So, we've worked with them to develop career plans where they’re happy, and we don’t add burdens that they don't want to take on.

We mean it when we say we’ll work with you to develop the career you want.
The first part of the interview process includes a personality test?!
Yes. Your personality is as important as your tax or accounting proficiency. We’ve worked hard to build a healthy, high-performing company. It’s important that you’re a good fit for us, and that we’re a good fit for you. Behavioral science gives us these insights.

A good fit is also critical to your career. It’s a lot more fulfilling to work in your areas of strength instead of always being told to work on your weaknesses. Everyone has weaknesses. That’s not a problem, as long as we have team members to balance each other out.

The Culture Index Survey is done online and takes 15–20 minutes. The questions are developed specifically for each position and whether you’ll be in the office or are applying to work remotely. There are no right or wrong answers.
